Well respected as a maker of violins, violas, cellos, and basses, Guy Cole of Avalon Studio has been involved with the technical aspects of violin making since 1980, when he began a course in stringed instrument repair with René Morel at the Manhattan School of Music. It was then that Guy’s passion for playing the violin and his interest in the construction and restoration of stringed instruments coalesced into a career that now spans over a quarter of a century. In 1982, he began his formal studies at the Violin Making School of America. Completing this demanding four-year course of instruction in three years, Guy graduated in 1985 and began work in New York City, NY at the shop of William L. Monical, the bowed stringed instrument consultant at the Smithsonian Institute. Guy’s excellence has been recognized widely by great players and luthiers alike. His awards for basses include Gold Medals from the International Society Bassists in 2012 and the Violin Society of America in 2006, and many other awards for tone and workmanship. Guy’s basses are played by great orchestral musicians in major symphony orchestras nationwide.
