LEOPOLD NOIRIEL – b. 1789 d. 1849
A neighbor, co-worker, and close personal friend of G.F. Pressenda, Leopold Noiriel worked in Turin for over three decades. Photo: This is the earliest known double-bass by the maker and dates circa 1825, not many years after Noiriel settled in Turin. Although this large gamba-patterned body is not typical for the maker, its charming edgework, F-hole pattern, head design, and choice of materials are found in multiple examples of his mature craftsmanship and style. This instrument is in a remarkable state of preservation. Tonally, it has extraordinary power with an amazing complexity. Its quick, punchy response creates a presence capable of leading a section.
