Charles Boullangier (1823-1888) was trained in his native France but then established his own shop in London in the late 1850s. The rather petite model of this viola contrasts with boldly figured materials of masculine appearance. His consummate ability is apparent in every detail of construction and, especially in the head, the influence of his Parisian training is evident.
