Evan Davenport’s passion for music and instrument-building began at a remarkably young age. His first experience with wood-working and crafting instruments came in childhood, when he used scrap wood and string to create simple guitars. After early piano studies he shifted his focus to and gained proficiency on the double-bass. At age 15 Evan began his apprenticeship with violin and bow maker Boyd Poulsen in New Mexico and upon graduation from high school interned at Fodera Guitars in New York. In 2013 Evan entered Boston’s North Bennet Street School (NBSS) under the tutelage of Roman Barnas; while there, he was one of only two people in the program’s history to complete a double-bass. Upon graduation from NBSS in 2016, Evan continued his studies with Guy Rabut in New York, and worked as an assistant to both David Wiebe in new instrument production and Arnold Schnitzer in instrument restoration. In 2017, Evan joined the Robertson team, where he performs anything from tonal adjustments, minor repairs, and major restoration to the making of his own fine violins, violas and double-basses, available exclusively at Robertson & Sons Violin Shop. His instruments show the skill, refinement, and maturity of luthiers well beyond his years. His modeling demonstrates a clear preference for that of the great Brescian masters (as seen in his October 2018 article in Strad Magazine). Evan’s instruments are currently in the hands of such great musicians as Daniel Pharr of the Quebe Sisters Band, conservatory-level musicians, and bassists of all levels.
