Arguably the most celebrated American double-bass maker in modern times, Daniel Hachez began his career in southern California as a lute maker. In 1972, Daniel moved to Albuquerque, NM and in 1982 began working for Robertson & Sons, where he received training in the restoration and setup of violins, violas, cellos, and basses. In 1999, he began focusing exclusively on making basses. To date, Daniel has made fifty basses. His numerous awards include the Hors Concours from the International Society of Bassists in 2010 and a Gold Medal from the Violin Society of America in 2006. Daniel’s basses are being played around the globe by world-class musicians, including pedagogue Paul Ellison, professor of double-bass at the Shepard School of Music, and Jeffrey Beecher, Principal Bassist of the Toronto Symphony and bassist with Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble. PHOTO: loosely modeled after a bass made by Joseph Rocca of Turin, Italy ca. 1830, the modest proportions and powerful, open, projecting sound of this bass make it one of the most versatile basses available. It is ideal for solo, orchestral, or jazz playing.
