Growing up in his father’s furniture workshop, Stefan Johann Krattenmacher began playing the double-bass in his early teens. After completing early training at the Mittenwald Violin Making School, Stefan worked in Germany for three years, and then worked for established makers in various countries, including Hong Kong, Australia, and England. He is a member of the Violin Society of America and the International Society of Bassists. Stefan has extensive knowledge about the historical double-bass makers and has written many informative articles on the subject, printed in such publications as The Strad and The Double-Bassist. His basses are played by members of the Brussels Opera, Philharmonia Orchestra of London, Berlin Philharmonic, and other professional organizations. PHOTO: based on the great English instrument made by Bernhard Fendt, modeled after “G.P. Maggini,” this bass is surprisingly comfortable to play despite its rather large proportions. The “f’s” are set slightly higher on the platform, making the upper register quite accessible. Tonally, this bass has a fabulous, “spread” orchestral sound with an organ-like presence in the lower register, sure to fill out the sound of any section.
