Andrew Carruthers – Santa Rosa, CA 2011
Andrew Carruthers, a native of Oxfordshire, England, studied at the Welsh School of Violin Making and Repair near Cardiff. Once graduated, Andrew joined Bein & Fushi’s restoration workshop in Chicago, IL for the purpose of apprenticing under master cello restorer Russell Wagner. In 1996, he opened his own workshop in Santa Rosa, CA where he focuses on instrument making and provides restoration services to both dealers and players. His instruments are played by professionals across the United States and Europe. Andrew published in The Strad from 1998 and 2012. His awards include a Silver Medal for Tone in 2014 from the Violin Society of America and a Certificate of Workmanship at the 2011 International Society of Bassists Makers Competition. PHOTO: this bass is Andrew’s only completed bass and was modeled after the work of Giovanni Cavani of Spilamberto, Italy ca. 1890.
