William Forster Senior (1739-1808)
Formerly in the collection of the British connoisseur and author Albert Cooper, this cello closely resembles the maker’s "Royal George" cello, dated 1782, which bears the coat of arms of the former Prince of Wales. During the 1780s Forster moved away from Jacob Stainer’s influence towards a style based on the flowing curves of instruments made by members of the Amati family. A lightly applied glowing red brown varnish enhances the fine materials employed by Forster. This cello is illustrated in Volume 2 of the Cooper Collection.
