BIAGIO CARUANA MARSIGLIESE – b. 1885 d. 1957
Biagio Caruana Marsigliese was a native of Sicily and went to Rome in the early 20th century
to study the double-bass. He worked as both a musician and violin maker in Rome for many
years. One of his double-basses won a medal at the Cremona Exposition of 1937 and another was
awarded a prize by the Academia di Santa Cecilia in 1952. Marsigliese's craftsmanship is very neat
and straightforward. The knowledge he acquired as a player was beautifully translated into his
instruments' designs and, though not widely known, was and is highly regarded for the ease of
playability and fine appearance of his instruments. Photo: This bass is a characteristic example
of the maker’s work. Its modest proportions and big sound promote ease of playability while
maintaining versatility.
