Paul Hart - Mt. Pleasant, UT

Born in 1948 in Oxford, England, Paul Hart became interested in musical instruments in high school in Provo, Utah, making a few lutes and other instruments without any formal training. In 1969 he began working at Peter Prier Violins, and from 1974 to 1978 he taught at the Violin Making School of America.  In 1978 Paul opened his own shop, Paul Hart Violins, where he now specializes in making violins, violas, cellos, and double- basses. His many awards include a Gold Medal from the Violin Society of America in 1978 for Viola workmanship, Gold Medal from the VSA in 1980 for Cello workmanship, and 9 certificates in other competitions. His former students include Jay Ifshin, Guy Rabut, David Gusset, Benjamin Ruth, Amos Hargrave, Tom Croen, and Damon Gray among many others.  His total production to date includes 153 violins, 132 violas, 140 cellos, 24 basses, 19 violas D’amore, and 122 Violas da Gamba and lutes.

Christian Pedersen - Albuquerque, NM

Having worked in violin shops since the age of ten, Christian Pedersen has vast experience in every facet of violin making and restoration. Christian majored in violin performance at West Texas State University and at the University of North Texas while apprenticing in the shop of luthier Steven Cundall in Aubrey, TX. He eventually became a shop owner himself and later became the head of instrument production at Brook Mays Music, the largest chain of music instrument stores in Texas. For the past 17 years, Christian has made his home at Robertson & Sons, where, through his unique finishing process, he has focused on producing exceptional violins, violas, cellos, and basses at reasonable prices. Christian’s work and guidance has had tremendous influence on award-winning makers, including Daniel Hachez, Nick Lloyd, and Trevor Davis. His awards include a Certificate of Merit for Tone from the Violin Society of America in 2011.

PHOTO:  This beautiful model was inspired by Mark Morton, Professor of double-bass at Texas Tech University, and modeled after his wonderful Neapolitan bass made by Gaetano Vinaccia.  Its modest proportions promote ease of playability and the removable neck makes it very desirable for the traveling bassist.  Tonally it is rich and warm with beautiful overtones and an excellent focus that projects well.  This bass is the result of a perfect marriage of two makers at their very best: Paul Hart's flawless workmanship and Christian Pedersen's amazing and unique varnishing techiniques. This bass is absolutely gorgeous!
