LUDOVICO RASTELLI – b. 1801 d. 1878

Born in the province of Alessandria, Ludovico Rastelli was one of the few professional violin makers in Genoa between 1830 and 1875. Nothing is known about where he developed his skills as a violin maker yet his distinctive style and a certain discipline in his work lead experts to believe that he was not a self-taught maker. His instruments are somewhat rare as he was more commonly known for his work in restoration. Despite this, he did produce a fair number of double-basses which today are highly sought after by great players for their exceptional tonal qualities and thick orchestral sound. Photos: Although his models can vary drastically from one another, the maker is consistent in the carving and outline of the masculine scroll, the vertical sound holes, and in his use of mostly slab-cut spruce and poplar woods. The rustic workmanship, longer body length, and the flat arching of the table suggest that the maker’s primary intention was to maximize sound production.  The bass is in excellent condition and is being offered with a certificate of authenticity from Robertson & Sons and Duane Rosengard.
